Monterey, Measured
Every August, Monterey becomes the center of the collector car world—and the auctions are its stock exchange.
RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Co., Bonhams, and Broad Arrow will each bring out their heavy hitters: 275 GTBs, Carrera RS 2.7s, pre-merger AMGs, and special, bespoke creations that were never meant to see the light of day. The catalogs look strong—but the real intrigue is in how the market responds.
This year, it won’t be about hype. It’ll be about judgment.
Provenance and presentation will drive results, but so will realism. We’re past the phase where any car with delivery miles and a well-lit photo gallery gets a hero’s reception. Buyers have become more selective, more informed, and less willing to chase a number just because someone else did last year. And sellers—especially private ones—have gotten sharper.
That’s where working with a specialist makes a difference. We help clients evaluate what to sell, when to sell, and how to position it—whether that’s through Monterey or a more discreet strategy. We know what performs in the room, what gets left behind, and what never needed to be there in the first place.
We’ll be waiting with bated breath for this year’s round of auction results and how they will continue to influence the collectible automobile market in 2025.
